Empyema is defined by purulent fluid collection in the pleural space, which is most commonly caused by pneumonia. Pleural space is fluid filled space between protective membranes around the thoracic cavity. Because of lung infections or pneumonia, the space gets filled with fluid or pus which increases pressure on lungs causing difficulty breathing.
