Ascending Aortic Aneurysms & Dissection

The main artery emerging from heart is called aorta. The walls of aorta where it divides into further smaller arteries sometimes weakens and bulges out because of the blood pressure. this is called aneurism, which can be very dangerous or sometimes fatal because if this wall ruptures, it will cause extreme internal bleeding without even the person realizing.

Symptoms:

•  Dull pain or tenderness in the chest
•  Cough or hoarseness
•  Shortness of breath
•  Pain in the back, jaw, or neck

 Diagnoses:

•  Best options are CT angiography or MR angiography.
• But if due to some other disorder CT or MRI are prohibited then Trans-esophageal echocardiography is preferred.
•  Echocardiography is also one of the options but not very effective.

Treatment:

•  If the aneurism is minor, then strict blood pressure control can help prevent progression of the aneurysm in many patients.
•  But if it gets worse, then operation is recommended by surgically repairing the damaged portion of artery.
