Estimates show that roughly 1 out of every 1,000 newborns are born with a hearing loss. Various factors may cause this condition such as infections during pregnancy, genetic and environmental factors. Congenital hearing loss can have significant impacts on communication, language acquisition, and overall development of a child.

For profound hearing loss cases, a cochlear implant may be recommended which is a surgically-implanted small electronic device that replaces the function of the inner ear. It works by sending sound signals directly to the auditory nerve, bypassing the damaged parts of the ear.
