Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), also known as reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS), is a rare condition in which parts of the brain are affected by swelling, usually as a result of an underlying cause.

Symptoms:

•  Seizures
•  Headache
•  Visual disturbances
•  Altered mental state
•  Sometimes limb weakness
•  Inability to speak

Treatment:

PRES is usually reversible with prompt diagnosis and treatment. Early recognition and effective treatment of blood pressure in patients with PRES in the acute setting along with seizure prophylaxis decreases long-term sequelae of this condition.
