Hyperparathyroidism

When the parathyroid gland, located in the neck excessively produces parathyroid hormone (PTH). This condition in medical terminology is known as hyperparathyroidism.    
 

Causes 
  • Overproduction of parathyroid hormone 
  • Low levels of calcium  

 

Symptoms 

Primary hyperparathyroidism Signs and symptoms 

  • Osteoporosis
  • Kidney stones
  • Excessive urination
  • Abdominal pain
  • Tiring easily or weakness
  • Depression or forgetfulness
  • Bone and joint pain
  • Frequent complaints of illness with no apparent cause
  • Nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite 

Secondary Hyperparathyroidism signs and symptoms 

  • Skeletal abnormalities such as fractures, swollen joints, and bone deformities.  
  • Chronic kidney failure 
  • Vitamin D deficiency

  • Surgery  
  • Medications such as Calcimimetics, Hormone replacement therapy and Bisphosphonates
