Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state earlier known as hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic coma (HHNK) and nonketotic hyperosmolar syndrome (NKHS) is a severe medical condition that arises from the complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus which leads to reduced fluid intake.  
 
 

Causes  
  • Irregularity in taking medicines for diabetes 
  • Infection  
  • Illness 
  • Stress 
Symptoms
  • Mild confusion 
  • Disorientation 
  • Coma 
  • Seizures 
  • Temporarily partial paralysis which resembles stroke. 
  • Frequent urination 
  • Excessive thirst  
Treatment

Modification of fluid deficit, electrolyte abnormalities and intravenous insulin
