Empty Sella Syndrome

Empty Sella syndrome is a medical condition in which pituitary gland shrinks or become flattened. It fills the Sella turcica with cerebrospinal instead of the normal pituitary.

 

Symptoms

•  Chronic headaches 
•  Swelling of the optic nerve inside the eye 
•  Infertility 
•  Low sex drive 
•  Impotence in male gender 
•  Vision problems 
•  Spinal fluid leaking from the nose

 

Causes:

Primary Empty Sella Syndrome 

•  Birth defect in the diaphragma sellae

Secondary Empty Sella Syndrome

•  Infection 
•  Pituitary tumours 
•  Radiation therapy of pituitary gland 
•  Surgery of pituitary gland 
•  Head trauma  
•  Sheehan syndrome  
•  Intracranial hypertension
•  Neurosarcoidosis 
•  Hypophysis’s

 

Treatments:

•  If cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is leaking from your nose, then surgery is recommended.
•  Certain medicines are given like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to prevent headache.
