Acne Vulgaris

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.

 

Symptoms:

•    Whiteheads (closed plugged pores) 
•    Blackheads (open plugged pores) 
•    Small red, tender bumps (papules) 
•    Pimples (pustules) 
•    Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions)

 

Diagnosis:

•    Physical examination

 

Treatment:

•    Acne medications 

Topical medication 

•    Retinoids and retinoid-like drugs
•    Antibiotics
•    Salicylic acid and azelaic acid 
•    Dapsone. 
•    Dapsone (Aczone) 

Oral medications

•    Antibiotics 
•    Combined oral contraceptives
•    Anti-androgen agents
•    Isotretinoin

Therapies

•    Lasers and photodynamic therapy
•    Chemical peel
•    Extraction of whiteheads and blackheads
•     Steroid injection
