Neurology & Stroke Medicine

RMI Bg

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of nervous disorders. Nervous system is a complex system that coordinates behaviour and transmits signals between different body parts. Neurologists are medical specialists in the field and treat several nervous disorders like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and stroke. Stroke is an abrupt interruption of constant blood flow to the brain that causes loss of neurological function. The interruption maybe caused because of a blockage or bleeding in the brain.

Neurology and Stroke Medicine is the 1st established stroke unit in KP so far. The stroke unit/neurology unit is a 12-bed ward, providing HDU level care to patients suffering from neurological illness. It is led by our experienced neurologists. We at RMI make sure to provide best care to our patients with the help of multidisciplinary team that include neuro physician, physiotherapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, dietician and a well-trained nursing staff. We actively manage patients with stroke and educate them or their attendants regarding long term care and rehabilitation.

Future Plans:

The IV thrombolysis for Acute Brain Infarct will be soon at RMI. The Neurology Department at RMI will be the first center in KP offering this service.

1. Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) for recording electrical activity across peripheral nerves, performed and interpreted by neurologist.

2. Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Electroencephalogram (EEG) for recording electrical activity of brain. It is performed in EEG room and is reported by a neurologist.

3. Plasma Exchange

Plasma exchange is carried out mostly in patients with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)- a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system.

4. Lumber Puncture

Lumbar puncture (diagnostic and therapeutic), to take cerebrospinal fluids for any kind of CNS disease testing or for injecting medicine into the CNS.
