Every week Rehman Medical Institute conducts a live session with consultant guests to create awareness on a subject. The theme of this week’s session was one of the least focused yet most sensitive topic, women’s mental health issues. To create awareness on this topic, Doctor Hooria Rashid was invited as a guest speaker. She is one of the most competent and experienced psychiatrist in the region. She got her MRC psych certificate from United Kingdom and served as a consultant psychiatrist in National Health Services (NHS) UK.

How many women are suffering from mental health problems?

As per statistics, 1 out of every 5 women suffers from mental health problems. Due to lack of awareness majority of the women feel uneasy to share their mental status with their family and peers, they also avert to consult any relevant psychiatrist. According to Doctor Hooria there are multiple mental disorders that create disturbance on one's smooth going life such as anxiety, depression, abrupt mood swings, furious behavior etc. Such mentally exhausted women need timely consultation so that they can escape from being the prey of melancholic lives ruining their whole families. Domestic violence being one of the inciting agents of mental health disorders is highly prevalent in our region.

She further explained different stages of mental health and suggested the possible ways to control and prevent mental health conditions. According to Dr. Hooria, people use different anti depressant pills without consulting the relevant doctors whenever they face mental health deterioration. She strictly suggested not to consume medicines for mental illnesses without consulting psychiatrists as the drugs are given after appropriate diagnosis of the disease.

Do not feel shy consulting a psychiatrist

She said, "majority of the women feel shy to consult a doctor or express their mental condition and emotional disturbance boldly."  There is also a myth that psychiatrists deal only with mentally disabled or psychotic patients, in reality every minor and major illness related to mental health is curable and can be consulted with a psychiatrist.

At the end of the session she insisted to create awareness among less privileged and unmindful population around us who suffer from mental health conditions, because every individual deserves mental serenity.
