Rehman Medical Institute (RMI)
Professor Muhammad Rehman is a pioneering cardiothoracic surgeon and visionary healthcare leader whose contributions have transformed the medical landscape of Pakistan. With a career spanning over 50 years, he has played a defining role in advancing cardiac surgery and medical education in the country.
Prof. Rehman earned his MBBS from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, in 1967 and completed a fellowship in cardiac surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. He further honed his expertise at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, London, before returning to Pakistan to serve as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Karachi, in 1975.
During his 28-year tenure at NICVD, he performed thousands of life-saving procedures, specializing in coronary artery bypass grafting, complex congenital heart diseases, valvular heart diseases, and total correction of Tetralogy of Fallot, achieving one of the highest surgical volumes in Asia.
Beyond his surgical achievements, Prof. Rehman has been a dedicated educator and institution-builder. He launched the Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery under the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in 1990 and personally trained numerous FCPS-qualified cardiac surgeons who now lead departments across Pakistan and internationally.
He founded the Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons in 1991, established cardiac centers in Karachi, Quetta, and Abbottabad, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Cardiac Surgery at CPSP and founding editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons.
In 2002, Prof. Rehman returned to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to establish the Rehman Medical Institute (RMI), Peshawar, a 650+-bed tertiary care hospital that has become a regional benchmark for excellence.
Under his leadership, RMI has expanded into a comprehensive academic health institute, including Rehman Medical College, Rehman College of Dentistry, Rehman College of Nursing, Rehman College of Allied Health Sciences, and Rehman College of Rehabilitation Sciences, producing highly skilled graduates serving in leading hospitals nationally and abroad.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to medicine and education, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2002.
