Breast Cancer Awareness Day was observed in RMI on 27 Oct 2018
Month of October is celebrated throughout the world for breast cancer awareness. Hence RMI also felt it a responsibility to create awareness. RMI also offered free mammography test in whole month of October. Consultants from RMI, Students and professionals from other institutes were also present on the occasion.
According to the convener of the event Dr. Amjad Ali that there is significant deviation from internationally recommended evidence-based guidelines in management of breast cancer patients in Pakistan. The main reason is lack of specialist training for doctors and other medical staff as breast surgery is not as developed a specialty in Pakistan as it is internationally. Quite frequently patients do not get investigated or treated as they should be. This needs legislation by govt. to set up a body which can look into setting up breast cancer management guidelines in the light of international research and can help implement these guidelines. We also need a comprehensive programme to teach and train our medical staff as how best to manage breast cancer patients. This whole project needs Govt ownership. Setting up a breast cancer screening programme will help a lot in diagnosing breast cancers at an early age which will significantly improve outcome for breast cancer patients.
